In today’s ever-changing funding environment, nonprofit leaders must be relentless in their efforts to build a reputable brand, engage their community, and carry out their mission, advises best-selling author and prime-time TV and radio host Jeffrey Hayzlett.

“It’s the relentless, not the lucky, who win in the end,” Hayzlett says.

Being relentless means doing the right things for your organization, doing them repeatedly, and not giving up, he says. Being relentless is hard work. “And it’s called ‘hard work’ because it’s hard,” Hayzlett says.

Tying Vision to Action

Hayzlett, author of Think Big, Act Bigger, says acting bigger is tying your vision to actions. “It’s about getting beyond the stories and excuses, the self-imposed limitations and preconceived notions, and becoming the biggest, baddest, best version of who you are – or your organization is — and what you want to be,” he states.

He is often asked why so many people “think small.” Most people aren’t sure about what they want, they don’t know how to get to where they want to go, and they lack the right attitude, according to Hayzlett.

“Acting bigger” is about being fearless, bold, and relentless, he says.

“Think about a legacy gift,” Hayzlett says. “It’s not luck that brings in that gift. It’s being relentless at doing the right things. It doesn’t come in out of the blue. It comes in because of the things you do day after day. It’s about constantly staying in touch with your community, sending them information about your legacy program, or building your reputation over many years.”

Move Past Hope

“The sooner you move past living in hope, the faster you’ll see the rewards,” he says.

Being relentless also is connected to attitude, Hayzlett adds. “It’s about being relentless in all I do and that’s an attitude that says ‘I own who I am.’”

“It’s about not listening to those little negative voices in your head,” he says.

Hayzlett is a keynote speaker at the 2017 Bridge to Integrated Marketing and Fundraising Conference Aug. 2-4 in National Harbor, Md. (near Washington, DC). Hayzlett will talk about the rewards of being relentless.
