While most high school students enjoy their summer break by relaxing, 18-year-old Towson University student Caitlin Adams, spent the entire month of June running across the state of Maryland.
A total distance of 390 miles, Caitlin ran from Cumberland, MD, to Ocean City, MD, over four weeks – similar to running a half-marathon every day for a month.
Why would she do such a thing? To help others in need.
The idea of raising money for those who needed prosthetic limbs first came to her in high school, when looking up the term “prosthetic limb” gave her perspective of how blessed she was to have her legs, allowing her to run – her outlet and passion.
“I want to change people’s lives by using the legs I am blessed with, I know I can make a difference.” says Caitlin on her website.
The main goal was to raise money and awareness for the Limbs for Life Foundation, a global non-profit organization founded in 1995 that helps provide prosthetic care for people who cannot otherwise afford it. According to the Limbs for Life website, more than 150,000 individuals lose a limb each year in the United States alone. Unfortunately, there are currently over 230 people on Limbs-for-Life’s waiting list; however, every $2500 raised, helps to provide a prosthesis for someone in need.
And while Caitlin’s run officially ended on the 27th, her charity website www.RunAcrossMaryland.com is still receiving donations. As of yesterday, Caitlin and her team had surpassed her goal, and had raised over $22,000 for Limbs for Life. That means that Caitlin’s passion and effort to help others, will effectively remove 8 people from the waiting list, giving them prosthetic legs that they would not have otherwise been able to attain.
“It’s inspirational that someone out there without limb loss, is doing something for those with limb loss,” said Dennis Haun of Metro Prosthetics, serving the Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas, “It’s pretty phenomenal that she’s using her limbs to provide limbs for others.”
You can still donate to Limbs for Life through Caitlin’s website, Click Here.
