Attracting and retaining qualified employees in a tight economy is the biggest challenge facing nonprofit organizations, according to a new survey by Production Solutions, a marketing and production management company based in the Washington DC area.
Production Solutions surveyed over 250 nonprofit executives to find out how they are managing budget and employment challenges. The survey results, which appear in the October edition of Fundraising Success magazine, found that many executives are struggling to find ways to manage their organizations with limited budgets.
Among the findings:
- Budget constraints and an inability to find qualified candidates are the two biggest challenges facing nonprofit executives.
- Almost half (48%) said the salaries and benefits they offered were non-competitive.
- Nearly 80% of executives experienced difficulty filling positions because of budget constraints.
- Entry level and part-time employees were the most difficult to retain.
- Volunteer board members were the most difficult positions to fill.
“It’s a tight market for employers and our survey tells us that only 33 percent of employers offer a formal training program for new hires,” said Greg Albright, Partner, Founder and Chief Communications Officer at Production Solutions.
“Our industry has to stay ahead of the curve – or at least keep up with it – if we are to remain competitive in the ever-changing landscape of marketing and fundraising. We hope that the industry starts to invest more in training and professional development.”
The survey also found that nonprofit executives were using creative strategies to retain and attract employees, such as offering flexible work hours and telecommuting. Nearly half the nonprofits (47%) had telecommuters.
Nearly two out of three nonprofits (63%) were outsourcing some of their work to contractors.
Production Solutions is one of the nation’s largest production management and program execution firms offering print, digital and integrated independent marketing solutions and strategic support for a wide variety of agency, nonprofit and commercial clients.
