Trees falling, fences swept, debris on the roads, and power knocked out in the aftermath of a huge winter storm sweeping through the South-East part of the USA. The winter storm is moving with ice and strong winds that leave destruction in its way.Â
Highway patrols have reported more than hundreds of vehicles involved in accidents and a tornado in Florida. This has left tens of thousands of North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina without power.Â
The air transport sector has also been affected significantly as Charlotte Douglas International had to cancel over 1200 flights scheduled for Sunday, which accounts for over 90% of its Sunday flights.
It is a hit for the airport as it hosts major airlines such as Delta Air Lines, which operates more than 300 flights on Sundays and had to cancel them all.
According to meteorologist Brian Hurley, the winter storm dumped up to 25cm(10inch) of snow in parts of North Carolina while moving to southeastern parts of the country.
North Carolina highway patrol spokesman First Sgt. Christopher Knox also reported that they received close to 800 service calls and responded to over 300 car accidents.
On Sunday, in eastern Raleigh, North Carolina’s Capital, two persons died when their car lost control off the road and into some trees due to the storm.
According to poweroutage.us, over 260,000 people lost power around mid-afternoon on Sunday. However, this figure changed during the night to around 150,000 people. However, North Carolina was the most hit region as it experienced more than 90,000 outages. The rest spread between Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia.
According to The National Weather Service confirmation, a 118mph tornado hit southwest Florida, and 30 mobile homes were destroyed.
