The oil crisis and the high cost of living aren’t the only things affecting Americans. A bigger problem in the US is guns, the never-ending problem that America can’t seem to get a solution to. Gun violence has become a big problem in the US.
In 2022 there have been 246 mass shootings in the US, and they have claimed the lives of about 18,800 Americas. Gun control has always been challenging in the US as the NRA insists on gun freedom.
Lawmakers in Congress are attempting to get measures to help reduce the number of guns in madmen’s hands. On June 9th, the house took action and passed a major legislative package on gun control.
The package passed Congress by 223 to 204 votes; lawmakers passed the Protecting Our Kids Act. This act is a collection of 6 new gun safety measures that should help deal with this problem.
This included raising the age to purchase a semi-automatic gun to 21, banning large-capacity magazines, and ensuring all guns are traceable. These changes will contribute to solving the problem.
Five democrats joined democrats to support the change, but the Bill is unlikely to pass in the Senate. Control in the Senate is evenly split, and there is no chance the Bill will pass the Senate.
Congressman Steve Scalise opposed the gun control measures and stated why he did it. He compared the gun legislation to 9/11, saying, “there wasn’t a conversation about banning airplanes after 9/11.
Some Americans argue that the new Bill is a step in the right direction and will help. Such small measures will make people safer and help deal with gun violence in the US.
